Planning: Brainstorming Ideas

We have created a mind map which we have scanned into the computer. This is showing possible ideas we could include in our music video. We have analysed different aspects of planning, including costumes, props, people, plot and locations.

Interview Analysis

By conducting an interview this has allowed us to gather rich in-depth qualitative data. As interviews are face to face this allows us to develop our questions to ensure we gain the data that we need. In order to do this we included leading questions and added extra questions to guide our participants in the right direction. Using secondary communication, we were able to look at body language, face expressions, the things they like, dislike and how they respond to things we say.
We included questions from a range of topic areas to ensure we collected as much data as we could. This way we could make sure we had lots of different data to cover all areas of our music video rather than focussing on one particular aspect. With the use of leading questions we could elaborate on any point we needed to gain more detail about. E.g looking in-depth at some aspects that are more important than others. The aim of our interview was to aid us when creating our music video, to produce a product that would suit our audience.

By asking a young audience we as a group were able to associate ourselves with those of the same age. We know just what they like/dislike which helped us to get the answers that we wanted. Conducting an interview allows our audience to have their say, gives them a chance to tell us exactly what it is they want from our video and it is our aim to provide a new fresh video for our generation.

We asked a range of useful questions from what aspects they liked most about a music video focussing on the mise-en-scene. This covers all areas from the artist, costume, props, setting to lighting and sound etc.

We started our interview asking what most attracted our audience to a music video. This gave information on how to start our video giving us ideas about what best to include. The tune/rhythm attracted our audience first however it was just as important to have lively, fun images to grab their attention which is what we aim to do; without a combination of these, our audience felt they would not enjoy watching a music video as much. We found that a transition of setting can draw in an audience, if the setting is familiar with the audience they are then able to associate more with the video e.g. switch from london to party scene.

The features of a video that seemed more attracting were the beat of the music, lyrics included in the video if they have meaning or the audience can associate meaning with the lyrics. If we include humour in the video this allows us to interact with the young audience. We can adapt humour into our video through the way we film, what we film and other factors.

From this interview we found most useful the questions where we asked what could benefit us most when creating our own video. By including a change in colour scenes, switching from vibrant colourful images to black and white proved a success with our audience.

The focus on the mise-en-scene has the greatest effect on how successful our music video will be, our audience wanted to see attractive settings/backgrounds if this did not catch their eye they wouldn't be interested to watch it. The lighting can have an overall effect as this can change the way we view images. We are able to focus more light on some areas than others, we found dark scenes can enhance brighter scenes.

The artist in the video can widely influence an audiences purpose for watching, the artist was a main factor for choosing a video. There was a combination of artist and theme that attracted an audience, the theme was important as this would determine whether or not the audience would enjoy the video.

Is there a wide range of music videos available and would you like to see more made available. Our audience says yes there is already a diverse range of videos but those already available could be changed or adapted to improve some aspects. The different genres would bring around different factors that would be involved, you wouldn't include the same things in a rock video as you would a pop video.

We produced our audience with the song in which we are going to use for our video and we asked our audience to comment about what they liked and what stood out most for them. They commented on the casuality of their outfits/clothing, this appeared up to date allowing young audience which they could relate to. The video represented a modern lifestyle, through clothing, atmosphere, partying etc. Commenting on how successful they thought the video was at attracting an audience through the use of setting, switches from london to parks. The natural setting was more popular than an artificial one.

We felt that undertaking an interview with our target audience was a big success and we were able to learn alot about our audience, their wants and needs.

Target Audience - Filmed Interview

Another way of collecting data is completing a filmed interview which is a qualitative method in which we can gain in depth answers which will expand on our questionnaire analysis. This is a good method as they are able to expand on their points explaining exactly what they want. By filming, we are able to go back at any time and review our research making reference to this when creating our product.

Questionnaire Results

SurveyMonkey Questionnaire

We have decided to create our questionnaire on www.surveymonkey.com as we thought this was a more efficient way of handing out our questionnaire to a large audience without having to print out multiple copies, in effect this saves us money. By using this we have been able to save time as we do not have to go around handing out questionnaires or waiting around to collect them back. As a result we have been able to send our questionnaire out to a larger audience giving us the sufficient information that we need. The results from our questionnaire will be sent back to us automatically via email again saving us time. This will make drawing up graphs from our data easier and more efficient.

We have separated our questionnaire into two links as we were only allowed a maximum of nine questions for each survey. To fill out our questionnaire click on the links below:
For questions 1-8 part 1
For questions 1-2 part 2

Target Audience - Questionnaire

So after completing some research into audience theories and how they can be defined, we have decided to complete some audience research which will consists of a number of aspects of a music video to see the wants and needs of our target audience. We are going to create a questionnaire in which we are gaining quantitative data which will be basic and easy to analyse in a generalising way. This will give us a basic understanding to research further. It will list some generic conventions and ideas to see which ones are best suited to our audience creating them the ideal music video. Some of the things we are going to ask them will be to do with:
• Gender
• Age
• Music genre
• Use of colour
• Artists

The first thing we are going to do is create a questionnaire which will create the basis of our target audience.

Analysing Music Videos

Sum 41- The Hell Song

A Rock music video featuring a series of dolls impersonating the four main band members including a range of other dolls to give the impression of a concert scene.
The video pays large attention to detail which improves the quality of the video, the expressions on dolls faces makes the video stand out more. The representation of gender in this video could be clearly seen through nudity in women which has been censored and rude gestures created by males. The video has been cleverly filmed giving a Cinema Verite effect, multiple close up shots of the dolls and action being filmed.

Tegan and Sarah- Call It Off

This video is minimalistic, set in one location a white room, with the two females also wearing white and the only colour being the telephone wires being wrapped around her body. This video works so well with little effort as the camera work is very clever. The way which the camera follows the female singer round the room makes you feel like you are there. This entices you into watching the video. The camera is cleverly zoomed in on certain aspects of the video making some parts stand out over others. These ideas all work together and has clearly been made on a budget.

R.E.M- Imitation Of Life

This video appears very simple, the video lasting a few minutes follows in a forwards/backwards direction. Set in one main location, therefore only aspects to be taken into account would have been crowd in that specific location and ensuring the camera focuses on certain places at a specific time to ensure perfect timing. The camera simply follows from one group of people to another switching forwards and backwards showing scences from an elaborate pool party. Considering this video was also made on a budget we can see they have cleverly integrated lyrics into the video by using an led screen, this gives off a nice finish to the video.

General conventions of R&B music videos

Here I have created a mind map of stereotypical conventions of R&B music videos. We will try and include as many conventions as we can in our own video but taking into consideration we will have a lot tighter budget. Also we would not be able to re-create many aspects, for example sexual intimacy etc. But we will however be able to include locations which we could glam up by using our creative skills and computer software. We would also be able to exaggerate on props and image etc to fit closely with the stereotypes. By clever use of camera skills and editing we will be able to create a better product, by using previous software and knowledge we can produce a high quality product.

Genre

Below is a mind map where we have brainstormed all our ideas including different geners and artists which we considered before coming up with our final decision.

After analysing and debating which songs would make a better video and bearing in mind its not only the song that will effect how good the video is but our camera skills and the good use of a camera. We have decided that we are going to create a R'n'B based music video. We considered multiple genres including Pop, Rock, and Indie before making our final decision.

Since we have chosen to create an R'n'B music video we could use the influence of artists such as Rihanna, Kayne West, Coldplay, Alecia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Drake, Example, Jason Derulo to help guide our video in the right direction, inlcuding which type of people to include taking on board the way they might be dressed or the way they act etc.

Introduction

For our brief we have chosen to create a music video, poster and digipak. I think this project will be best suited to the skills we have. Due to completing a media project last year this means we all have skills with media programs and have better knowledge of media techniques including other graphic and photography skills.

As there are four of us in our group we are able to bring different skills together to create a better end result. I feel that after completing (AS Media) I have developed skills in camera work which I can contribute when creating our video. For my final AS product I created a music magazine this therefore gives me a headstart on artist research and music choices. The skills I developed here will largely help when creating posters for our music video here I am able to enhance my skills through the use of editing programs, photoshop etc. Below is a link to my AS Media Portfolio to show my previous work and skills I have learnt throughout the previous year.
